“Neither the life of an individual nor the history of a society can be understood without understanding both.”
Sociology is the study of society and the institutions within it, their processes and functions. The course allows students to explore the structures of society and the groups within it and how they are affected. Students will be introduced first to sociological theory and research methods, which underpin their remaining units. The course will then explore education, work and poverty, the media and crime and deviance. Students who are looking for a subject that combines academic theory, with critical thinking and opportunities for discussion, would be well suited to this course. As an A Level which is considered a social science, this would pair well with Psychology or an English or Humanities subject. Students will be expected to engage critically with readings, current affairs and take part in class discussions and debates.
